While growing up in a military family, Mariel lived in several states before her family settled in Middle Tennessee. After both she and her twin sister transplanted to South Carolina for college, her parents soon followed them to the Palmetto State. Whether practicing law, working in her vegetable garden, or cheering on the Gamecocks, Mariel cannot imagine calling anywhere else home.

In her spare time, Mariel enjoys hiking with her husband, son, and two dogs.

Susan joined the firm in 1996 and left in 2002 to focus on her family. Susan and her husband, Jones, have three children.  Susan returned to the firm in 2010 after her youngest child started school.  She is so thankful that the firm welcomed her back and has enjoyed returning to the practice of law.  Much of her free time is spent watching her children play soccer, baseball, and basketball. When not attending athletic events, her family enjoys spending time on the May River in Bluffton.  Susan is also an active member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.

Got a minute?

Bill Davis usually does, whether the request is from a former student, a clerk at Baker Ravenel & Bender or a family friend.

Over the years, Bill has mentored dozens of people trying to find their way in the legal profession or in life. He does it because he remembers.  “I know what it was like to be starting out and not really have a good idea about what I should be doing or how to go about doing it,” he said.

For the most part, he’s mentored informally. He used to teach insurance law at the University of South Carolina School of Law, so it was natural for students to approach him after class. He’d answer their questions, but at the same time he had a bigger goal: to help make sure they knew what they needed to know to succeed as professionals.

Though his efforts had been entirely informal over the years, he now has an official role in preparing lawyers for their futures. Through his participation in the South Carolina Bar Lawyer Mentoring Program, he’s paired with a young attorney for a year so that the new lawyer develops a firm appreciation for the profession’s high standards and ethical obligations and expectations.

But don’t worry that his new commitment will curb his eagerness to help. If you need a minute of his time, just pick up the phone or corner him by the water cooler.

Jon was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, around a family of music lovers. Jon’s parents would regularly expose him to everything from the blues to beach music. The fine-tuned aspects of music fascinated him and he began to hone his skills at a young age in the recording studios around Charlotte. Starting out as an intern, Jon soon learned many of the intricacies associated with complex recording equipment and he was ultimately credited as a mixing assistant and assistant engineer on five major-label record releases. After leaving the studio behind to pursue his bachelor’s degree, Jon began recording and performing with his own musical groups throughout southeastern North Carolina. Jon comes from a family of Gamecock alumni and those roots eventually pulled him further south and he chose to attend the University of South Carolina School of Law. The meticulous nature of professional-grade audio recordings served him well throughout law school when grappling with multi-faceted legal concepts, and Jon continues to use those skills today while dealing with the daily challenges associated with practicing as an attorney. In his spare time, Jon continues to record and play with local musicians around Columbia, many of whom were his classmates in law school.

Hunter was born and raised in Sumter, S.C., and grew up in a small, tightknit family. After attending the College of Charleston, he left the South to study law in the nation’s capital at American University. Eventually, he decided to return home to begin his legal career closer to his friends and family. Living and learning in different locations like Sumter, Charleston, and Washington, D.C., has taught Hunter that there are often multiple solutions to problems, and different viewpoints for tackling issues. He employs this experience in his professional practice by understanding that effective advocacy requires creativity and open-mindedness in addition to hard work and efficiency.

In his spare time, Hunter enjoys spending time on Lake Murray with his family, playing guitar, and watching the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets, and Clemson Tigers.
