JC grew up in a military family with an emphasis on service. In this vein, she worked as a firefighter before law school, and volunteered as a Young Life leader through college and graduate school. These days, she enjoys cooking for large groups of people and tending to her 130-lb Great Dane puppy’s every whim. She also enjoys playing catch, shooting hoops, and reading about all things theology and neuroscience.

Michal Kalwajtys joined Baker Ravenel & Bender following its merger with the firm of Dougall & Collins where he had practiced insurance defense for seven years.

Michal’s J.D. from the University Of South Carolina School Of Law is actually his second law degree. In 2002, he earned a law degree at a university in his native Poland.

Michal first visited the United States in the summer of 1997; he worked as a camp counselor in Pennsylvania. Michal returned to the same camp during the next three summers, eventually meeting there a counselor from Florida, who would become his wife. He immigrated to the United States after they married and he finished law school in Poland. Following the birth of his son in Columbia in 2010, and having become US citizen in 2016, Michal is now firmly rooted in South Carolina and proud to call it home.

Michal spends most of his free time playing guitar and violin. Since his high school days, he has been a rock and metal guitarist. Over nearly three decades, Michal has performed several hundred shows in dozens of venues throughout South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and in and around his hometown of Torun, Poland. You can still see him perform from time to time with his heavy metal band “Bona Lisa.”

Jay began his legal career as an associate attorney at a general practice firm in Murrells Inlet, SC. The experience gained from a diverse practice often provides the perspective needed to properly analyze the problems faced by his clients and implement creative approaches to their litigation needs.

Since then, Jay has focused his practice almost exclusively on civil litigation. Jay practiced with a boutique litigation firm in Charleston, SC where he gained valuable experience in construction litigation, community association/HOA Law, and appellate advocacy.

Jay and his wife, Carene, decided to return to her hometown of Columbia, SC to start their family. He joined a small insurance defense firm in downtown Columbia where he handled a variety of cases, including automobile liability, premises liability, products liability, and construction litigation, prior to joining Baker, Ravenel & Bender.

When not practicing law, Jay enjoys spending time with his wife and their two children, Sarah Margaret and James. Jay started playing golf at a very young age, and he still enjoys playing with friends occasionally. Jay’s passion is inshore and offshore fishing, and spending time on the boat with his beloved Boykin Spaniels.

From the age of 10, Chip has been an actor, and he is still very active in the Columbia theatre community, having appeared in over 30 shows across many theatres in the Midlands.  Because of the nature of live theatre, where anything can happen (and often does), the ability to improvise and react in real time has benefitted him greatly during trials.

When not practicing law or treading the boards, Chip is a husband and the father of four rapidly growing children.  This also provides him an excuse to be an active member of the Gamecock Bourbon Society.
